Inkscape is a popular free, open source vector drawing program for Windows, Mac, and other OS formats. Desktop Publishing with Inkscape
This 22 minute Screencasters video shows an overview of how to use Inkscape for page layout mock-up. The first minute is just talking about what desktop publishing is followed by why to use Inkscape for layout. Finally at 2 minutes or so in it starts actually demonstrating document setup, setting units of measurement from pixels to inches, and using a variety of menu items and tools. The final document created is a mock-up for a letter size two-column newsletter or brochure with photos, lots of text. Not a do this, do that, do this tutorial but useful for those wanting to see it in action.
