Eliminate Trapped White Space in Drop Caps
Fine-tune initial caps
While you can align text neatly along the lines of an A, a V or a D, some letters are not as cooperative. After pulling in the first line to eliminate space between a dropped L and the rest of the word you are left with an awkward bit of trapped white space. You have several choices:

  • Ignore it - Don't let it bother you.

  • Try pulling in the subsequent lines of the paragraph to fill in the gap — it might work with some typefaces and not look odd.

  • Rewrite the copy so it starts with a different (more cooperative) letter.

  • Try a different style, such as a raised cap, or no initial cap at all.

Dropped caps may cause the most problem with extra space in the middle of a word, but pay attention to spacing with raised caps too. You may need to kern letters such as F, P, or T to eliminate extra space between letters along the baseline.
