Adjust Initial Caps for Best Appearance and Readability

A frequent complaint from readers is that initial caps make it harder to read the text. The size, position, or type used for the initial caps makes the word it goes with more difficult to decipher.

One way to combat this is to pay extra close attention to character spacing between the initial cap and the second, normal size letter in the word. The macros or scripts that word processing and page layout programs use to automatically create dropped caps is especially prone to creating holes in words - where there should be no space.
