WhatTheFont is one of my favorite ways to identify unknown font samples. And now I can take that font identification with me on the road -- no computer needed. If you have an iPhone and you're a designer, WhatTheFont for iPhone should be one of the first apps you install. Not only does it work great, it's free.

Only as Good as Image and the WhatTheFont Database

As with the Web-based version of WhatTheFont, the results you get depend on both the quality of your image and whether or not the font you need to identify is in the WhatTheFont database.

You need a fairly steady hand and a nice size font sample to photograph. However, if you have a decent photo, using the WhatTheFont iPhone app is a breeze.

Easy to Use

The app presents a list of potential matches to the font in your image.

It takes only a tap or two to fine-tune the character recognition. The app shows a nice sized list of font matches. And you have the option of emailing font details to yourself (or someone else). WhatTheFont for iPhone presents an uncluttered version of the Web service that works nicely on the iPhone screen. It offers the option of going to the Web (within the app or using the Safari Web browser) to see more information about a chosen font.

When and Why You Need WhatTheFont for iPhone

It allows you to easily identify cool or interesting fonts you see out in the world when you don't have access to a computer. See a billboard font or a sign in a window that intrigues you? Snap a picture with WhatTheFont for iPhone. Meeting a friend or a client for lunch and they're curious about the font on a menu? No need to pull out your laptop, just pull out your iPhone. WhatTheFont for iPhone is an excellent and useful free iPhone app for the on-the-go designer.
