When you combine your 8 objects (rather than group) the paths merge and create a single object. Doing this also changes the overall appearance of the object. Applying fill and stroke colors to a group of objects and to a combined or merged object creates different effects.

Changing fill and outline colors will give different effects with uncombined and combined objects. Make a few copies of your snowflake and try different ways of combining the objects and coloring them.

  • Use a solid fill with no outline.
  • Use a solid fill with the same color outline. Vary the stroke width/shape (depending on your software).
  • Use one color for fill and a different color the outline. Try contrasting colors.
  • Use gradient fills.
  • Use no fill with a color outline. Vary the stroke width.
  • Select individual objects and give half one color and the other half another color.
