Featured Fab Font
This week our pick is a Typewriter style font from an Austrian free font site. Gfonts, founded in 1998 by Lorenz Goldnagl, was one of the first "private" font factories in Austria. They offer this font in two styles -- regular and smashed (distressed). GF Halda is created from scanned text typed with a Halda typewriter. Both versions have a slightly distressed look but the smashed version contains some smudged or overtyped characters.

Notes: GF Halda is free for private use. You must register to use the font commercially.

Commercial Picks
Do you use a PC but you need to send fonts to a Mac user? Maybe you're ready for OpenType. Compatible with Type 1 and TrueType fonts, you can use an OpenType font on Mac or PC and there is just one font file that contains both screen and print fonts. It's sort of serif, and sort of not. Created to be 'organic' with no uniform strokes or curves, but still a nice, neat appearance. Designed by Gabriel Martínez Meave.

Font Factoid
What makes a classic? The letterforms inscribed at the base of Trajan's column in ancient Rome inspired countless type designers. Built around 111 AD to celebrate the victory of the Emperor Trajan over the Dacians, the finely chiseled serif letters have been greatly studied, admired, and duplicated over the years. Several typefaces bearing the Trajan name are derived from this inscription. The shape and construction is the basis for many other classic roman typefaces.
