Use Common Diecuts

diecut cards

Although these cards were cut with handheld corner cutters, rounded corners are a fairly common diecut available for business cards and other projects. But you never know what else your printer might have so ask!

NEED TO KNOW: diecuts | embossing

Diecuts can add interest or usability to a piece. Small slits can hold business cards or other inserts. A square or circle in the cover of a booklet can show a title or give an intriguing peek at piece of a larger artwork inside. An unusual corner shape can enhance the look. However, custom dies can substantially increase the cost of the piece. Instead, use common or standard diecuts.

Printers often have standard dies for common cuts. This way you don't pay to have a die made. They may also have a collection of custom dies from previous jobs that you may be able to work into your design at substantial savings. If you think a special cut will enhance your project, check with your printer to see what they already have available and play with ideas for working that into your design. Combine embossing with a standard diecut (such as an embossed design with a circular diebut in the middle) to add your own original touch.

Consider using standard paper punches when dealing with small quantities. Print a basic business card (quick printer or desktop printer) then use a decorative handheld punch to add star, circle, square, or diamond cut-outs or rounded corners yourself.
