Definition: More familiarly known as a header, a running headline is repeating text that appears, usually at the top, of each page or every other page in a book, manual, or newsletter. Although customarily at the top of the page, running headlines can appear in the side margins or at the bottom of the page. The running headline may be the book or publication title, chapter or section title, or it may alternate. Often the page number is incorporated with the running headline.
