Put a few words such as the headline for your card on a blank page in your document. In most programs you insert new text by clicking on the page and typing or creating a text box or frame. Refer to your owners manual for the exact instructions.
Type your headline several times and choose a different typeface for each. Compare. Which one best matches the mood of your card? Will you be using more than one typeface? Type out some more text then apply two different typefaces. Find a pair of fonts that work together. Try some that don't work well. Why do they work or not work?
Compare your favorite type choices to your clip art that you selected in an earlier lesson. Do they work well together? Would a different font work better?
Grandma Baker (remember, she's making a Back to School card for these lessons) wrote a 4 verse poem that she wants to use. Three verses will be on the front page. That's a lot of text for the front of a greeting card so Grandma decided against an overly decorative font or a script font. Why? Instead she chose a simple, not too light, not too bold sans serif typeface. See the example in the sidebar. Does this typeface work with her graphics? Why or why not? (my answer is down below)
What more visual examples? See this sample font selection that illustrates some of the points from this lesson including several more examples of matching type and graphics styles.
Next > In Lesson 7 we'll finish up the front of our card by placing the images and text where we want them.

Why Grandma chose this font
An overly decorative or script font would be too hard to read with so much text (3 verses of a poem). Grandma Baker chose this sans serif font (Franklin Gothic Demi) because it echoes the sharp (and some soft) edges and simple lines of her three square clip art pieces. Simple as that. She started out with a serif font, but it just didn't work as well. Would you have chosen something else? Why? Remember, personal preference is also part of the selection process.
