Lesson 5: Create a Greeting Card Class
Assignment

By Jacci Howard Bear, About.com Guide

In your desktop publishing program, choose 3 black & white or other 2-color images.

First, practice resizing them by grabbing a side or corner and dragging your mouse. Check the help files for your software to see if there is a key you can hold down while dragging that restrains your image to proportional resizing.

Next, use whatever keyboard commands or dialog boxes provided with your software to specify a percentage (example 50% larger, 75% smaller) or exact dimensions (1" x 1.5" for example).

Resize all three images to approximately the same size.

Now try recoloring each image -- even if you like the original color, recolor them anyway just for practice. Change back to the original color when done, if you wish.

Look at the simple shape drawing tools in your software. Try drawing squares and circles around your images. How much does it change the appearance? Does it help unify a diverse bunch of images? In fact, that's one trick for taking 2 or more images in different styles and giving them a similar appearance -- put them all in matching boxes. Try it.

Next > In Lesson 6 we'll try out a few different fonts for the text.
