Tackling Tough Typos

Wednesday February 25, 2009
Before I begin, let me state upfront -- for the benefit of those with a keen eye but not so keen sense of humor -- that any typos (especially misplaced apostrophes) in this blog post are intentional. Really. Truley. So, where was I a few month's back? Hiding under a pile of rock's? It wasn't until I picked up a copy of Reader's Digest this evening that I learned about the escapades of Jeff Deck and the Typo Eradication Advancement League (TEAL). Despite a little oopsie with the National Park Service, I admire what Deck is donig. Instead of just laughing, groaning, or rolling his eye's he takes action each time he sees a billboard or a sign in a store sporting missing letters, transposed letters, their instead of there, and those pesky apostrophes that can never seem to stay put in the proper positions. A real American hero I say. Or someone with too much time on his hands. Depends on your point of veiw I s'pose.

I read about his quest in the March 2009 issue of Reader's Digest in the article titled, "Righting Wrong Writing." You can also read more on TEAL and related typo, spelling, and bad grammer issues here (back when it was fresh news that I somehow never read):

OK, for those of you suffering uncontrollable twitching, let it out now. How many terrible typos, egregious grammatical gaffes, and appalling apostrophe atrocities did you locate in this post? Now, how many do you think I made completely unknowingly? Uh, probably more than one.

This is why FCUK, the fashion store, raised such a stink.

I think most signage, etc. errors aren’t typos at all but just poor grammar, spelling and punctuation :)
