Riding the Wave of the New Swoosh in Logo Design
Logo Design
Compare these current trends to the 2007 logo design trends they previously described. In 2007 logo designers were having fun with punctuation and little lines (what logorange called hot dogs and transmission beams) in logos.
For 2008 the fonts range from "ugly 80s" type to sci-fi fonts to minimal fonts. Transparency makes both trend lists and it's a topic of discussion in the comments accompanying the article as well as the pros and cons of following trends and what really makes a logo a logo.
What do you think of these trends? How much of a role, if any, do these trends play in your own logo design decisions?

Comments
These are trends and as such they did not necessarily make that list because they are effective but sometimes because they are ‘cool’.
Effective
- The rainbow style is effective because of its contrast it creates and is particularly eye catching
- Some of the sci-fi fonts - they are easy to read, unique and memorable
Less effective:
- Using a fashionable shape like a wave or leaf with no link to the brand. The leaf, in particular, has been over-used so using it makes your brand one of many and less memorable
- Some of the “Underground” typography is not practical as it’s just plain hard to read
