Readers Respond: Using Free Mac Desktop Publishing Software

Responses: 5

By , About.com Guide

Free page layout options for the Mac are limited... but if what is available does the job well then who needs more, right? Have you used Scribus or OpenOffice on the Mac to do desktop publishing? Can they compete with InDesign or QuarkXPress? Share your experiences with these or any other free Mac desktop publishing software you've tried.

scribus

You have to install ghostscript for scribus to work... I got the download from the scribus homepage. Haven't played with it much yet. Works fine on OS 10.5 but won't run on 10.4... at least not for me.

Scribus

I just cannot figure out how to even install this program and didn't find any guidance to do so. It seems to be overly complicated to deal with. Unfortunately, it is in the trash.

Scribus

I've tried Scribus. Played around with it a couple of times. Wasn't crazy about it, so off it went to the trash bin.

It's not free but I use Adobe Indesign 2.0 The best by far. The other free programs just don't compare.
