The Non-Designer's Design & Type Book
- Robin Williams takes basic graphic design concepts and presents them in an easy-to-understand book that also tackles the thorny issues of typography and how to choose designs that are attractive and effective. Robin also wrote The Mac Is Not A Typewriter, another good book on graphic design that I would recommend everyone reading at some point. The Non-Designer's Design & Type Book even works for individuals who aren't graphic designers yet have to develop effective print pieces for their business or organization. In fact, these people were her motivation for writing the book. However, that doesn't diminish its usefulness for designers of all stripes. I've used this book for several years in teaching electronic publishing classes and I can't recommend it highly enough.

A book designers do not like
- There is one book which makes few of these lists: Type & Layout by Colin Wheildon. The reason is that it tells what works in the print fields of newspapers and magazines based on actual research in to the comprehension of readers, not what they like the look of. Read this book but do not tell other designers. You will then be able to produce layouts which may not look as flashy as some but which will actually get responses from an editorial or an advertising viewpoint. It does acknowledge that sometimes the words do not matter, just the initial impact on the minds of those who see the layout. For example, it heaps praise on a surfing article where the words cannot possibly be read in detail but where their layout induces a positive impression of the activity. The second edition was published by Worsley Press in 2005. It is available from Amazon and elsewhere.

Best Graphic Design Book
- Graphic Communications Today, by Ryan & Conover, is a great reference book for designers, teachers, and students. It is “the definitive book on graphic communications.”
