Although I did later use version 6.5 most of my desktop publishing work was in PageMaker 5 before I moved into other fields. This was my first experience with real desktop publishing software. This version didn't come with many templates or extras like later versions but it was a great tool for learning how to really compose pages from scratch. It wasn't hard to learn and I designed lots of projects with it. The longest thing I did in it was 300 page book.
If you want to learn basic desktop publishing without committing to spending lots of cash and can pick up an old version of PageMaker really cheap or free go for it. I didn't use version 6.5 very long but it was still a very good but had some newer features in it.

I agree. PM5 was one of my earliest experiences with desktop publishing software (after some really early versions of The Print Shop) and I used it for many, many years.
