Definition: The inverted exclamation - ¡ - is a punctuation mark used in some languages, such as Spanish. Exclamations are used to frame an exclamatory statement, with the inverted exclamation at the beginning ¡ and the exclamation at the end ! .
The design of the inverted exclamation symbol in typography generally calls for one of two alignments:
- X-Height alignment where the top or dot is aligned with the x-height of the font and the rest of the character descends no further than the lowercase descenders;
- Uppercase alignment where the inverted exclamation is simply an upside down mirror image of the exclamation.
