Some templates come with rules, tinted boxes, or other elements. Often the suggested colors are designed to work well together or project a particular image or feeling. If you like the overall layout of the template but the colors aren't quite right for you, change them. Go lighter or brighter. Turn a tri-color scheme into a monochromatic look.
After replacing the placeholder for the graphic and text in the illustrated template with a new photo and copy, among other changes, the color of the black sidebar is changed to light blue.
