Design Check

Design Checker catches errors
The Design Checker examines the publication and looks for elements that may affect printing.

With the publication open, select:

    Tools | Design Checker...

The program display elements that affect the appearance and printing of the document. Some items that the Design Checker found in a test publication included:

    • Resized Graphics
Use the resize tools in Publisher to find the size wanted then export the original graphic to a graphics software and resize, change the orientation, or alter colors in that program. Save the file then place it in the publication. Images resized within page layout software may not print properly or could cause problems while creating the PostScript file. This is true of most page layout programs, not just Publisher.

    • Elements outside Print range
Using the printer specifications selected for the publication. Design Checker knows the non-printing area of the selected printer and can alert to graphics or text blocks that extend into that non-printing area -- even if they look OK on screen.

    • Empty Objects
PostScript files include every object on the page even invisible ones, increasing processing time and file size. The Design Checker creates an alert for hidden elements behind another element or containing no text, etc.

Some items found only affect appearance, such as two spaces at the end of a sentence. Hard to see on screen but the Design Checker will catch it.
