Is Desktop Publishing Training Needed to Do Graphic Design?

By Jacci Howard Bear, About.com

Question: Is Desktop Publishing Training Needed to Do Graphic Design?

The short answer: "Yes"

Answer: While it is possible to be involved in some aspects of graphic design without utilizing desktop publishing software and skills, today's modern graphic designer — especially those involved in print work — do use desktop publishing software and must be as knowledgeable about the mechanical processes of properly preparing digital files for press as they are with the creative processes involved in designing ads, brochures, business cards, signs, posters, and other print communications.

Graphic designers who work at agencies or within large companies may sometimes work with production artists who handle most of the desktop publishing tasks, allowing them to focus primarily on the creative part of the job. This isn't always the case. Freelance designers almost always need both graphic design skills and desktop publishing training.
