Top 5 Advanced Page Layout Programs - Macintosh

By Jacci Howard Bear, About.com

These advanced page layout tools produce output in industry standard formats, have extensive typographic control and graphics handling capabilities. Most of these applications can be further expanded with specialized plug-ins. These are the primary programs of professional desktop publishing on the Macintosh platform.

1. Adobe InDesign

It's serious competition to QuarkXPress. For companies committed to a QuarkXPress workflow, change might not be feasible; but, PageMaker hold-outs and individual QuarkXPress users should take a look.

2. QuarkXPress

Although InDesign threatens its desktop publishing dominance, it remains a formidable tool in the hands of professionals. Version 6 brings direct PDF output, full-resolution preview, improved Web design tools and XML support.

3. Adobe PageMaker

Not quite on a par with InDesign or QuarkXPress, it still delivers professional quality results. Marketed toward business users, it outshines Publisher in output but not in price or ease of use.

4. Adobe Framemaker

It provides powerhouse publishing for corporate and technical publishing of complex documents for Web, print, and other distribution methods.

5. Deneba Canvas

This package does it all - page layout, illustration, photo-editing, presentation, and Web graphics in one integrated package. It costs less for all this than for any other of the single purpose advanced page layout packages. Now available for Mac OS X. Our Graphics Software Guide gives the Windows version 4 and a half stars.
