Definition: A measure of the tonnage or poundage of paper is the paper weight. Paper weights may be expressed as:

Paper weight is one factor in the overall impression the printed project conveys. Heavier, thicker papers feel more substantial and can lend visual heft and perceived importance to a project. Lighter weight papers can reduce mailing costs and the overall thickness and bulk of publications such as catalogs and directories.
