Typographer

By Jacci Howard Bear, About.com

Definition: Typography is sometimes seen as encompassing many separate fields from the type designer who creates letterforms to the graphic designer who selects typefaces and arranges them on the page. Traditionally, the typographer was someone with specialized knowledge about typefaces - whether or not they were actual type designers - and about the entire field of typography and printing. The typographer chose the typefaces for books and other printed matter then the typesetter would use those type specifications to set the type.

Today, the type selection process is generally handled by the graphic designer although many designers rely on knowledgeable typographers or typography experts to help them know what typeface choices to make.

Examples: "Typography in graphic design involves the selection of appropriate typefaces and their arrangement on the page."
