Mug Shots

By Jacci Howard Bear, About.com

Definition: Pictures of people that focus on just the head or from mid-chest and up are called mug shots. Mug shots are often used in newsletters and newspapers. Mug shots are the type of photo typically used in school yearbooks and company directories. Mug shots of feature columnists may appear next to their column in a publication. In brochures and annual reports the designer might incorporate a mug shot of the business owner or company board. The name is no doubt derived from the mug shots taken of people arrested by the police.
