Definition: Applying ink, varnish, or other coating over the entire printed piece is flood coating. Clear varnishes, UV coatings, and Aqueous (water-based) coatings applied all over a piece provide a dull (matte), satin, or glossy finish.

Flood coating can reduce glare or enhance readability or serve as a design element to smooth, highlight, add texture, or create added dimension.

Flood coating is not part of the papermaking process. It's done to the paper after printing.

Also Known As: all-over coating | flood varnish
