Bullet

From Jacci Howard Bear's Desktop Publishing Glossary, for About.com

Definition: A bullet is a typographic symbol used to call attention to lines of text such as in a list.
  • A bullet can be round
  • A bullet can be square
  • A bullet can be composed of small pictures or icons such as those found in dingbat or symbol fonts

Guidelines for using bullets include not putting too much space between the bullet and the list item, using a bullet that is not too large (overpowering the text) or too small (not noticeable enough), and use bullets consistently.

A bullet may also be used to draw attention to items that are not technically part of a list such as a bullet in front of phone number or to identify a call out.
