Definition: In page layout, a rule is simply a line used to separate, organize, emphasize, or otherwise decorate a page.
Rules can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. They are often used to set apart headlines or subheads or to separate individual topics. A type of vertical rule, a downrule, separates adjacent columns of text. Rules may be thick, thin, solid, dashed lines, and in color. Sometimes two contrasting rules are combined for special effects.
