Definition: Hyphenation is used to break up longer words at the end of a line in order to have a more even, less ragged right edge or to create better-looking fully justified text. A hyphen is inserted between syllables of a word with the portion after the hyphen moving to the next line. The software hyphenation settings are often referred to as Hyphenation & Justification. Some of the Hyphenation & Justification features and settings include the size of the hyphenation zone where soft hyphens are inserted, the H&J dictionary that specifies acceptable word breaks, and the greatest number of acceptable consecutive lines of text that can end with a hyphenated word.
