A metric measure of paper weight, grammage is based on the same square meter sheet of paper, regardless of paper grade. Grammage is expressed in grams per square meter or g/m2 or GSM.
In the US paper weight is typically expressed in pounds (basis weight) and is calculated based the weight of 500 sheets of paper in the basic size (which varies by paper grade). In the US many papers are sold with both the grammage (metric) and basis weight listed.
