During the paper manufacturing process the side of the paper that does not touch the wire on the paper machine is the felt side. It is usually smoother than the bottom or wire side and is generally the preferred side for printing. Depending on the process used, the felt side may or may not be easily distinguished from the opposite, wire side.
Felt side is a characteristic of all papers. It is not the same as felt finish, a texture applied to some papers in the paper making process.
