GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is distributed free and is used for photo editing/retouching and image composition. Sometimes referred to as the poor person's Photoshop, it boasts an impressive array of features and capabilities and enjoys widespread support.
The GIMP was the 2010 About.com Reader's Choice Winner in the Free Desktop Publishing Software category.
Available as of 2011: GIMP 2.6.1 for Windows and Linux, Mac, FreeBSD, OpenSolaris
2.6 is the most stable version. There is a 2.7 development release. Version 2.8 has no confirmed release date but you can read about the expected features.
