The primary workhorse of desktop publishing is your page layout or composition tool. The major players in this category have free trial and demo versions of their desktop publishing software to help you evaluate their products.
- Adobe
You'll need to sign up for a free Adobe membership but then you can download a trial version of the latest InDesign package. In addition to InDesign, you can get trial versions of other Adobe software including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver.
- Corel
The CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, although primarily classified as graphics software, can be used for page layout as well. Get a trial version to take it for a spin. You can also try out other programs such as Corel Designer Technical Suite, and Painter. Corel also offers trial versions of WordPerfect, and photo editing programs like Paint Shop Pro and Photo Express.
- Microsoft
There are trial versions of many Microsoft offerings used in desktop publishing including Publisher.
- Quark
Try out QuarkXPress by downloading a fully-functional 30-day evaluation copy. Quark also offers evaluation copies of QuarkCopyDesk, Quark Interactive Designer, Quark Print Collection (prepress tools), and demo versions of QuarkXPress Passport.
- Serif
While they don't offer a trial or demo version of the current version of PagePlus, you can get an idea of what Serif programs are like by downloading completely free, full versions of some earlier editions of Serif software. In addition to the free PagePlus SE, you can pay less than $10 to get version 9 of PagePlus. Really like what you get, then consider purchasing the most current versions.
