About Coins Guide Susan Headley has a simple tutorial on How to Start a Coin Collection on Four Bucks. This project for new coin collectors uses the Jefferson nickel. Jefferson nickels were first minted in 1938. An 8.5 x 11 inch piece of cardboard makes a nice display mat for up to 72 Jefferson nickels (1938 through 2009). You can improve upon the handdrawn display mat described in the tutorial by using your computer, software, desktop printer, fonts, and clip art.
  • In your desktop publishing or graphics software program set up a letter size page in landscape mode.

  • Leaving approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch margins (to accommodate the non-printing area of your printer) set up horizontal and vertical guidelines at 1" intervals. You should have 8 rows and 10 columns of 1" squares.
