Project Type:

CD Case Sleeve (4 panel CD Cover)

Purpose:

To provide removable sleeves to go over the individual jewel cases for four double CD sets of music for meditation.

NOTE: This makeover project is a fictional CD series for a fictional company. Any resemblance in names or design to any real company or product is purely coincidental.

Original:

The original is a (simulated) mock-up created in-house, never printed. It depicts only one in a series of planned four 2-CD sets. The plan is to have all four sleeves be unique but maintain a consistent look and feel across the series. See Resources, below, for larger images of all panels in this mock-up.

Makeover Parameters:

The Echo "Gentle" series contains soft, repetitive, and soothing music and nature sounds designed for relaxation, stress relief, and meditation. The sleeve designs should reflect the same qualities.

1. Use the size/dimensions as specified in the mock-up. When folded, the front and back of the sleeve are 5 inches wide by 5.625 inches tall. The sides are 7/16 inches wide.

2. Each cover should be unique but must maintain a consistent look and feel for each of the CD sets in the series: Gentle Water, Gentle Pasture, Gentle Sky, Gentle Breeze

3. The back of the CD should include text describing the contents of the specific CD set plus a thumbnail image and brief descriptions of each of the other CD sets in the series (use placeholder text).

4. The back of the CD should have an area reserved for a bar code and other "small print" such as the running time (approximately 2 hours per set), copyright info, etc. For purposes of this makeover project, you may simply use a shaded box or placeholder text as shown in the mock-up.

5. The text "Echo," "Music for Meditation," and the nsme of the CD set (such as "Gentle Water" or "Gentle Sky") must appear on the front and side panels.

6. The text "A WellingAudio Production for Jaston Baker Sight & Sound Studios" must appear on the front cover.

7. The text "WellingAudio" must appear on the side panels.

8. For the purposes of the makover project, create a single full sleeve sample (4 panels) for any one of the sets in this series. Then create the front panel only for the other three sets.

9. The front and back panel designs will also be printed as paper inserts inside the CD jewel case.

Notes:

You are free to use whatever fonts you want. The specific typefaces used in the mock-up are:
  • Liorah BT for the cursive Echo
  • Minion Pro for most other text
  • Mario for WellingAudio (This is the corporate typeface for this fictional company. If this were a real company, you would use this exact font. For this makeover project, that is not necessary.)

Additional Notes on the Music on Each CD Set:

Each set contains a CD of music and a CD of nature sounds. These descriptions may help you as you come up with images for each CD.
  • The nature sounds of Gentle Water are those of gently flowing water and light rains and water sounds associated with a still pond.
  • Gentle Pasture is the sound of grasses blown by a gentle wind or crunched underfoot as some unknown animal walks through a field along with some bird chirps and insect sounds.
  • Gentle Sky contains some sounds of nature such as the swoosh of bird wings in flight but also contains some manmade sounds to represent twinkling stars and billowy clouds.
  • The sounds in Gentle Breeze are all connected to the wind -- not heavy winds but sounds such as rustling leaves, the tinkle of wind chimes, or laundry lightly flapping on the clothes line.

Posting Your Redesign for Critique:

When posting your redesign in the forum, please attach either a PDF file or a JPG or GIF or PNG image (such as a screenshot). Doing Makeovers:

This and all the makeover projects are intended for your use in expanding your desktop publishing and graphic design skills. You can submit your makeover for critique in our forum or simply show it to friends for comments or keep it to yourself. Doing these makeover projects can also help supply new designers with material for their portfolios until they have acquired more real world projects and experience. Feel free to do as many different versions as you wish.
