It's the presence of a drop shadow that suggests that an object isn't flush against its background.

Generally when we create a drop shadow we choose the size, placement, and imaginary light source causing the shadow based on what looks good. It's an arbitrary choice. But there is an actual basis in reality that can help us create more interesting drop shadows.

The distance of the object from the background determines the width of the shadow. Objects closer to the background cast a narrower shadow.
