| Business Description | My department is still often referred to as "camera" because we still have a large horizonal camera, that's hardly used. I scan photos, about 80 per day. I size and tone about 60 digital photos from staff photographers and wire services. I work the "early" shift noon-9pm. I use mostly Microtek E-6's and UMAX Astra 2400 or S-12 flatbeds. I scan film with Microtek 35T+'s. Until a month ago I was working on a P233 Deskpro. Just got a Celeron 500 Deskpro. |
| Tips/Advice | Newspaper work is often the start of many in DTP. Perhaps at a small weekly or daily (less than 50k circulation) for $8-10 an hour. A mid sized daily (50-150k) is a step up in pay $10-14 an hour and benefits. I don't know much about large dailies.
At the upper end of management, these bigger papers have very little connection with the workers, but they control your salary, working conditions, etc. in the name of company profitability.
Low and mid level managers that a worker does come into contact with, are more concerned with making themselves look good and keeping a very tight budget as upper management dictates. Your needs come long after the company's. It's hard work. Lousy hours and mediocre pay. However you will learn a lot. If you choose this route, hang in as long as you have to, but realize to make this a lifelong job is extremely hard and not very profitable. |
