Business Description As the lead worker among a half-dozen coworkers, I handle a lot of the technical and problem-solving stuff that no one else knows or wants to know about. In addition to designing and laying out brochures, newsletters, directories, etc., I research problems and new issues, handle digital prepress, convert dtp files for web use, keep on top of new technology, and handle questions from other departments on graphic and file formats. I'm The Answer Woman, aka Miss Know-It-All!
Tips/Advice If no one else in your office knows how to do something, don't wait to be taught...find out yourself. Make good use of EXPERTS in the field (especially a good listserve), and never be afraid to pick the brain of someone in a tangential field, i.e., the guy at the print shop, the graphic artist who helped you answer another question. New technology can be scary for those who are just approaching it, but it's fun to play with and mastering it makes your job more secure and makes YOU more valuable, in-house AND out.
