Business Description I am currently the pre-press production manager at a small weekly newspaper. I design ads and print shop work (from business cards to books in B&W and full color) as well as direct the workflow between prepress and the pressroom. I also built and maintain our computer network [4 computers and 2 printers (color inkjet and B&W laser) on an ethernet network]. I have one and a half years experience in the windows environment. I'm responsible for training new employees and making recommendations for hiring and computer/software purchases. My desire is to start my own business but would like to restrict my work to newsletter design/maintenance and self-publishing. I do scanning in both color and B&W.

When I started we did most everything by hand as far as paste up of the pages. We are now fully paginated and output to an imagesetter. I enjoy my work for the most part but would like more time to learn Photoshop and Illustrator beyond the basics.

Tips/Advice If you're just starting out my advice would be 1) to pick the brains of those who have been in the business for awhile, 2) become familiar with the whole process from start to finish, not just your part. Knowing what is going on and needed in the position before you and ahead of you makes it easier for you to do your job in a top quality way. DTP is a team effort whether you are in business for yourself or working for someone else. Having a working knowledge of the entire process is a good thing for you and for the team.
