Definition: In page layout, rules are simply lines used to separate, organize, emphasize, or otherwise decorate a page. Rules can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. They are often used to set apart headlines or subheads or to separate individual topics. Rules may be thick, thin, solid, dashed lines, and in color. Sometimes two contrasting rules are combined for special effects.
