Fabulous Fonts
week of February 19, 2001

This online newsletter page is from 2001 and may contain some outside links that are out-of-date (no longer working). However, because it also contains links to various font downloads and tutorials from this site it is being kept online.

Sample image of Bungnipper from uddi uddiBungnipper is half outline, half solid, with a playful tilt and random dots. This fun little number from uddi uddi lacks much in the way of punctuation but the letters and numbers are nicely quirky for posters or nameplates or for use in graphics.

Tiro TypeWorks says of their typeface 1530 Garamond:

"This reproduction of Claude Garamond's famous 16th century designs was executed by Wm Ross Mills. It is alone among the many, so-called Garamond 'revivals' in being strictly based on the printed appearance of the original metal types. The 1530 design follows Garamond's earliest work as a punchcutter, revealing both the influence of his teachers, Augereau and Tory, and the genesis of his own mature style."

Font Factoid
Speaking of Garamond, many of the designs credited to Claude Garamond and reproductions bearing his name are actually the work of or based on the designs of Jean Jannon.

Favorite Fonts
For weeks this list has been dominated by the same 7 or 8 fonts with a few others rotating in and out to complete the top 10. For something a little different this week I picked out some of the least favorite (that is, least looked at and downloaded) fonts. This doesn't mean they aren't neat fonts, they just haven't been discovered yet. Discover something new this week among these five hidden treasures:
• Dutchmen - a cute and very detailed dingbat font of dutchmen and maidens in traditional dress. A few windmills and boats too. (no Mac)
• Interplanetary Crap - a hollow, sans serif, stencil font. It looks as if the stencils are partially inked. (no Mac)
• Geekbats - a comical dingbat collection of goofy-looking nerds.
• Typodermic - a nice slab serif font with either a slightly old West feel or a touch of the collegiate letter sweater look.
• MSDWT Manuscript - a shareware font for teaching handwriting (a slanted manuscript style).
