Before You Buy Home Publishing Software

Sometimes called desktop publishing software, home publishing or creative printing products are primarily for the non-professional designer. These products share several common features including low cost, ease of use, and the inclusion of clip art, fonts, and templates for crafty projects. With a few exceptions, these programs lack the ability to produce output in a format suitable for commercial printing. The bulk of home publishing software is for the Windows platform.

General Purpose
These programs do it all. Filled with templates or design wizards, clip art, and fonts these packages create a wide range of projects including cards, scrapbooks, banners, newsletters, and photo albums. Some packages also offer templates and tools especially suited to small or home-based businesses including business cards and brochures. The most powerful of these applications include photo-editing utilities, word processing features, and occasionally commercial printing options.
