DTP Careers
Written by Waywthwrdz on Mon Feb 9 23:57:20 1998 GMT

I am a senior in high school and have taken several Computer Applications courses. I have become interested in Desktop Publishing and/or Graphic Design, but am unsure how to get into the field and what schools have good programs (that don't require drawing classes). Please help!

In addition to my earlier reply I'd like to point anyone interested in a desktop publishing-related career to check out my newest feature about finding a DTP job.

Part 1
How employers describe jobs that involve desktop publishing (hint: they don't always come out and say 'Desktop Publisher Wanted')

Part 2
Salaries being offered and the required software/hardware (and other) skills in demand.

Part 3
Where to find the desktop publishing jobs -- online resources, starting with some of our other Mining Co. GuideSites.

I came into desktop publishing from a totally different direction (was originally in school with an eye on hospital administration!). So I can't offer any specific advice on school programs but I do have some suggestions.

First, here's a collection of Links from our Graphic Design Guide for schools with programs specifically for Graphic Design:

Do take some art classes if you can, even an arts & crafts type class. The computer is merely a tool. DTP/Graphic Design doesn't require you to be an "artist" but a feel for design/what looks good/understanding *why* it looks good, etc.-- it helps tremendously.

Other ways to enter the field other than a formal education are to work in related fields -- printing, for example. Working the counter at a Quik Copy shop can even be a good thing while you're in college working on a design-related degree!

More later,
