Before You Buy Desktop Publishing Software Suites or Collections

By , About.com Guide

There are special collections and suites that can put all the desktop publishing software tools you need on your desktop at great savings. The content changes periodically with new releases, but what you'll usually find are some combination of page layout, illustration, image editing, and other extras rolled into one package.

Everything You Need

Collections or integrated packages that include page layout, illustration, and image-editing provide the core applications needed for desktop publishing. Adobe combines its core applications into the cost-saving Creative Suite. Corel has graphics suites that provide basic page layout within CorelDRAW. Deneba Canvas is an integrated package that meets all these needs.

Mainly Graphics

If you already have a favorite page layout application, you can build up the graphics portion of your toolkit with a suite of mainly graphics applicatons. QuarkXPress users might consider the Adobe Digital Video Collection where they'll get Illustrator and Photoshop plus quality Web tools at great savings. The Corel graphics suites also include a huge collection of clip art and fonts.

Budget Bundles

When your software needs are simple or you don't want the larger collections, these low-cost suites can help fill in the gaps or provide complete solutions. AppleWorks for the Mac and the Serif collecitons qualify as budget bundles as well as the free Microsoft Office-like suites such as EasyOffice.
