- Specify margin guides, columns, and gutter width in the New Document dialog box.
- To create ruler guides, position the mouse pointer in the horizontal or vertical ruler. Click, hold, and drag to position the ruler guide on the page. The pointer changes to a two-way arrow until the mouse button is released.
- To create a ruler guide on the pasteboard (spread guides), click on a portion of the ruler that is not overlapping the page and drag the guide onto the pasteboard.
- Guides must be set individually for left and right facing Master pages.
- As ruler guides are dragged onto the page the Measurements palette displays X,Y coordinates to aid in placing the guides at the desired position.

+ means "and" that is, Ctrl+1 means hold down the Control and 1 keys simultaneously. When plus refers to the plus sign, (plus) appears in parentheses as in Command++(plus) means hold down the Command and Plus keys at the same time.
