Expand Font Archives For Windows

By Jacci Howard Bear, About.com

Most free Windows fonts on the Web are stored in ZIP archives. You have to open and expand the archive to use the fonts.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 1-5 minutes
Here's How:
  1. You will need a special program to open files with the .zip extension. WinZip is one such program.

  2. Once WinZip (or another similar program) is installed it can be activated by clicking on the downloaded .zip file.

  3. Click on the font to get a copy of it out of the archive (it's called expanding the archive) and on to your hard drive.

  4. See the instructions, below, for installing the font once you've expanded the ZIP archive.

Tips:
  1. Not all the files in a font archive may be fonts. Sometimes you'll find text graphics or text files.

  2. The text file (if there is one) in the archive often contains important information about how you can legally use the font.

  3. WinZip is only one possible program you can use. Stuffit Expander for Windows is another one.

  4. TrueType fonts will have an extension of .ttf and OpenType fonts may have a .ttf or .otf extension while PostScript fonts have at least two files each: .pfb and .pfm
What You Need:
  • WinZip
  • Stuffit Expander Windows
