When cost is more critical that the life-expectancy of the binding method, choose the less durable finishing touches. For publications that will be used or handled infrequently, less durable tape or velo binding may be more cost-effective than the more durable but generally more expensive spiral and perfect binding methods.
If you're going the do-it-yourself binding route, a long reach stapler for saddle-stitching is less expensive than most comb binding or other small office binding machines. Or, do side-stapled booklets with an ordinary office stapler. DIY perfect binding requires less equipment and is faster than the more durable DIY hard cover case binding.
