Consistency

Whether designing a single page flier or a multi-page newsletter, a consistent look and feel pulls a design together and aids readability. Consistency is achieved through the use of the same or similar color, graphic images, fonts, and alignment.

Contrast

Differences in style or appearance create contrast. The more "different" then the more contrast there is between elements. Examples are Big vs. Small, Dark vs. Light, and Thick vs. Thin.

Bonus Study Material: What if Stop signs came in pink squares, yellow circles, or green triangles, depending on the changing whims of a town and a few of its residents? Imagine the ensuing traffic jams and accidents. Repeating design elements and consistent use of type and graphics styles within a document shows a reader where to go and helps them navigate your designs and layouts safely. Explore the principles of repetition, consistency, and unity in page design. Consistency - Principle of Design
