Grids in desktop publishing

Grids provide a framework for the page layout.

Page Layout

The process of arranging elements on a page. The final arrangement of text and images. Software designed for this purpose.

Rows/Columns/Grids

When items are arranged on a page, using invisible rows or columns -- a grid -- aids in aligning objects, creating a visual hierarchy, and leading the eye across the page.

Guides

Non-printing lines mark the margins and columns and other grid boundaries of a page. They aid in flow and alignment of text and positioning of graphics during page layout.

Alignment

How things line up affects appearance and readability. Text as well as images can be aligned to the left, the right, centered, or aligned with each other.

Balance

There are many ways to achieve a visually balanced layout. The goal is to evenly distribute text, graphics, and white space so that the page doesn't appear to tilt.
