By , About.com Guide

Greeting Card

Usually folded pieces of paper that contain text or images on the outside and inside. Used as birthday greetings, party or wedding invitations, thank you cards. Can be any size but a typical desktop-designed greeting card is a single sheet of paper folded into quarters.

Flier, Poster, Banner

Fliers or posters are typically used for announcements (such as a sales flier or a party announcment for a company bulletin board). Banners and posters are often used as party decorations (such as a Happy Birthday banner), or wall decorations. Banners may be printed on continuous paper of any length or printed on multiple sheets of paper that is then taped together.

Brochure

A primary marketing tool for businesses of all sizes. Can be as simple as a tri-folded sheet of letter size paper printed from an inkjet printer or as elaborate as a professional printed multi-page, full color, glossy booklet.

Newsletter

Typically 1-8 page (but can be longer or smaller, such as a postcard size newsletter) publication used to disseminate information to people with a common interest. Newsletters usually contain mostly articles (text) but may also have graphic elements including photographs and clip art. May be distributed free of charge (such as a marketing newsletter sent to customers or a club newsletter) or may be available as a subscription publication.
