Lesson 1: Create a Greeting Card Class

Assignment

By Jacci Howard Bear, About.com

There's probably no point in laying out hundreds of dollars for PageMaker if you only want to create simple greeting cards to send to your friends and family and have no desire to use or learn its more advanced features. If, however, you are planning to produce work that will be printed by a commercial printer, want full control of all aspects of your design, and the widest range of compatibility with other programs and platforms then you need to look at the Basic and Advanced categories rather than the Creative Page Layout tools.

If you already have software, determine what category it falls under. This may dictate the type of documents you can create and how they can be printed.

If still searching for the right software, consider first how you plan to use it, your platform (some programs are only available for the Mac OS or only for Windows), and your price range.

You should already be familiar with basic operations. If not, take time to learn each of these steps:

  • Start (Open) the program
  • Access the HELP file for your program (or have the manual handy)
  • Create (Open) a New File
  • Open an Existing File
  • Copy, Cut, and Paste Operations
  • Save a File
  • Exit the program

Next > In Lesson 2 we decide what it is we are going to create.
