While there are all kinds of great free calendars out there, the perfect calendar for you may be the one you create yourself. Writing for About.com Graphics Software, Ian Pullen has a great tutorial (that gets a jumpstart using templates from our About.com Rubberstamping site) on How to Make a Calendar in Inkscape. Don't use Inkscape? Don't fret. The basic instructions are easily adapted to GIMP and other free graphics software.
The tutorial is also a good introduction to basic page layout. It uses guides to position page elements, a little photo cropping to get the image you want, and describes the basics of using layers.
